What Makes a PE Investor Look Twice at a Middle Market Company? Quality of Management

Post Capital’s Michael Pfeffer provides guidance as a judge in Alliance of Merger & Acquisitions Advisors’ “Piranha Pool” contest

Post Capital Partners' Michael S. Pfeffer had some sound advice for contestants in the “Piranha Pool” at the Summer Conference of the Alliance of Merger & Acquisitions Advisors in Chicago: focus on the management team. The event was a private equity-themed version of ABC’s Shark Tank TV show in which each presenter has 20 minutes to make a case to the judges for a capital investment in their company.

Pfeffer, co-founder and Managing Director of the New York-based middle market investment firm, brought more than 20 years of experience as an investor in small companies to the judge’s role.

Speaking after the event, Pfeffer said, “Although smaller companies are often the most in need of capital to address a wide range of business and ownership needs, there is an undersupply of institutional, long-term capital available to finance smaller businesses. But it’s not just capital that small companies need for success. The quality of the management team is the critical factor.”

He added, “That’s why Post Capital employs an "Executive-First" deal sourcing and investment strategy in which it pursues Executive-First platform searches, management buyouts and growth capital investments. Our executive partners bring specific industry expertise to not only source deals but also to portfolio company management after the closing to implement smart growth strategies that build on their strengths.”

The Piranha Pool event was held at the AM&AA’s annual summer conference, which took place from July 22 – 24, in Chicago.
